Fund-raising butterflies return to 1000 Lakeside
Highcross is hoping to reach its target of releasing 1000 butterflies into the grounds of 1000 Lakeside this summer, to support the work of Portsmouth-based charity, The Elizabeth Foundation.
Last summer, over 200 Painted Lady butterflies were released – raising more than £2,000 for the charity – and the race is on now to achieve sponsorship for even more caterpillars this year.
Each caterpillar can be sponsored for £5, with all the money raised going towards The Elizabeth Foundation, which supports infants and pre-school-aged children with hearing loss and their families. Highcross is providing the facilities at 1000 Lakeside for hatching the caterpillars, plus a special ‘butterfly bungalow’ which will allow children from The Elizabeth Foundation to see the butterflies close up as they develop.
Karen Tyrrell, general manager at 1000 Lakeside is hoping all the building’s occupiers and other local businesses will want to take part: “The release last year went extremely well and the butterflies obviously felt right at home, in fact some of them took a lot of encouragement to fly away! This is a great opportunity to raise money for a local charity and enhance our local habitat at the same time.”
Alison Robinson of The Elizabeth Foundation, adds: “We really appreciate the on-going support and fund-raising which Highcross and 1000 Lakeside have provided. This initiative also gives our pre-school children, all of whom have hearing difficulties, a fantastic visual learning experience, and as you can see from the photo, it’s really hands on!”
Anyone wishing to sponsor a butterfly can contact Karen Tyrrell at 1000 Lakeside on 023 9238 9056 or Alison Robinson at The Elizabeth Foundation on 023 9237 2735 for more details.
