Lakeside North Harbour Business Campus celebrates Apprenticeship success

Press  :  16 July 2015

When Rahim Ahmed joined Lakeside North Harbour Business Campus nearly 2 years ago at the age of 17, he had left Charter Academy school in Portsmouth not sure which direction he wanted to take.

After successfully applying for the role of Meeting and Conference Assistant Apprentice at Lakeside, he quickly realised that business was his passion; and after much hard work has recently passed his Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Business and Administration.

Over the last year, Rahim has spent time learning ‘hands on’ about the administration, conferencing, events and meetings, restaurant and reception areas in one of the most dynamic and busiest Business Campus’s in the south.

Rahim says: “When I left school I wasn’t sure which direction to take, although I knew that I didn’t want to go to college full time. Strangely enough this role was probably the opposite of what I thought I wanted; but now I realise that one day I want to run my own business!”

“The best thing at Lakeside is the atmosphere and the people that I work with. It’s always challenging and often very busy, but working as a team, we always make sure that the job gets done. As part of my ongoing development my next role will be to understand the facilities management side of the business and what’s involved in operating successfully a multi-let commercial property. Having a real ‘hands on’ opportunity at Lakeside has made a huge difference to me and I feel that I am growing with each new challenge.”

Recognising the value of taking on Apprentices, Karen Tyrrell, Client and Communications Manager at Lakeside North Harbour Business Campus says: “Rahim has worked so hard since he joined us and is a real asset to Lakeside. We recognised something in him when he came for the interview and he has proved us right, in fact we knew within the first couple of weeks of him starting that he was going to be a real asset to the campus. Nothing is too much trouble and he is highly regarded by the team and our occupiers.

“He will now be working with other areas of the facilities team, so that he can gain an understanding of the other roles in the business. We believe that his training does not stop and we will continue to invest more time and skills to help Rahim grow in his confidence and ability.”
